WIPO is inviting university law-student teams to its 2027 intellectual-property moot court competition. The new case explores legal questions connected to live streaming.

Deadline: 6 November 2026
Location: Online rounds; qualifying finalists travel to Geneva, Switzerland

Who can apply?

The competition is open to university teams of law students aged 35 or younger. Teams should review the current rules for composition, documents, and video specifications before preparing their application.

What the opportunity offers

Participants develop written and oral advocacy through a simulated international IP dispute. The leading eight teams advance to the Geneva finals scheduled for 8–10 June 2027. Funding conditions for finalists are described in the competition materials.

Application documents and video

  • Submit the online application and a declaration signed by both students, any coach, and the dean or faculty representative.
  • Both team members must appear in an English video of no more than five minutes, played at normal speed. Upload an MP4 or MOV no larger than 400 MB using WIPO’s designated video-submission link.
  • Address one of the two legal questions in the official perfumed-agenda scenario: possible IP protection or barriers to protecting the scent.
  • Include team introductions and roles, the issue and your position, the legal framework, at least two substantive arguments, a counterargument with your response and a conclusion.
  • Use the university, country and speakers’ surnames in the filename. Deliver the argument professionally as though addressing a court rather than reading a script.
  • Video evaluation: legal understanding 30%, structure 20%, persuasiveness 20%, legal authorities 20%, professional presentation 10%.

Competition timetable

  • Applications: 12 October–6 November 2026. Selected teams announced 30 November.
  • Moot problem issued 10 December; clarification requests due 17 December, with responses 15 January 2027.
  • Written submissions due 1 February 2027. Online rounds: 1–12 March.
  • Eight teams advance to Geneva: quarter-finals 8 June, semi-finals 9 June, final and awards 10 June 2027.
  • The published timetable uses Geneva time.
