About the internship

UNDP’s Global Policy Centre for Governance supports inclusive, transparent, accountable and effective governance. This internship contributes to its SDG 16 Data & Analytics and Gender Data workstreams, including global data collection, analytical reports and platforms that communicate governance statistics.

The gender data work examines why evidence, particularly time-use data, is not consistently reflected in policy, planning, budgets and public investment. The intern will help research country experiences and the institutional barriers that affect how this evidence is used.

Key responsibilities

  • Collect, validate, analyze and visualize SDG 16 data for global and country-level analytical products.
  • Prepare datasets, code scripts and reproducible workflows using R, Python or Stata.
  • Support digital platforms and interactive dashboards through data preparation, pipeline automation, quality assurance and visualization.
  • Maintain data and metadata documentation and support the annual SDG 16 Global Progress Report and other knowledge products.
  • Help strengthen country reporting on SDG 16 indicators, including women’s representation in the judiciary, through compilation and follow-up with national counterparts.
  • Assist with consultations, webinars, workshops, meetings and communications around governance data products.
  • Research governance measurement and map how time-use and other gender data inform policy and fiscal decisions.
  • Support country case studies, policy briefs, stakeholder mapping and knowledge exchanges on gender data use and inclusive public finance.

Who can apply?

Applicants must be citizens covered by the EEA Agreement or have legal residency in Norway. At the time of application, they must also meet at least one of the following academic conditions:

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree, preferably in Statistics, Data Science, Economics, Public Policy, Gender Studies, Sociology or a relevant social science with a strong quantitative background.
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree, preferably in one of the relevant disciplines above.
  • Have recently graduated with a relevant university degree and be able to start the internship within one year of graduation.
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme and undertake the internship as part of that programme.

Skills and experience

  • Demonstrated quantitative analysis, statistical methods and data visualization experience using R, Stata or Python, including data cleaning, management, exploratory analysis and interpretation.
  • Experience with population surveys or administrative records is highly desirable.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with an interest in governance, justice, gender equality, public finance and evidence-informed policy.
  • Excellent written and spoken English. French is desirable; working knowledge of a Scandinavian language is an asset. The vacancy’s job information lists French and Norwegian as desired languages.
  • Good organization, time management, teamwork and social media skills, alongside the ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Interest in international development. Experience in a developing country or international organization is an advantage.

Stipend and internship conditions

Interns are eligible for a monthly stipend at a rate determined by the duty location. The vacancy does not state an amount. Where an institution, government or another party provides financial support, UNDP pays any difference between that support and the applicable stipend.

Other internship expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring government or institution. Interns are not UNDP staff members, cannot represent UNDP officially and should not expect employment at the end of the placement.
