Programme overview

The fellowship gives participants experience with Morgan Stanley teams directing investment toward sustainable economic development and solutions that can address major global challenges at scale.

The Global Sustainability Office and the Institute for Sustainable Investing support the firm’s work in sustainable investing: pursuing competitive investment returns alongside beneficial environmental and social outcomes. They collaborate across Morgan Stanley to develop sustainable-finance approaches, create investment tools and produce research and insights for investors.

Placement and duration

Fellows spend 10 weeks with a team whose work relates to sustainability or investment impact. Team assignments reflect the fellow’s interests and abilities, together with the firm’s requirements. Previous host teams have included:

  • The Global Sustainability Office.
  • Global Capital Markets (GCM).
  • Private Credit & Equity (PC&E).
  • Wealth Management’s Investing with Impact (IIP).

The summer placement runs from early June through mid-August. Participants must attend Morgan Stanley’s New York City offices in person throughout the full programme.

Learning and networking opportunities

The programme develops emerging sustainable-finance leaders. Fellows participate in activities organised both across the firm and within their divisions. They meet sustainable-finance practitioners and senior colleagues through small-group learning, informal coffee conversations and social events.

Role and responsibilities

Specific projects depend on the host team. Potential responsibilities include:

  • Assessing business strategy and investigating industries in depth.
  • Developing sophisticated financial models.
  • Creating presentations and explaining findings clearly to an audience.
  • Tracking market developments and communicating relevant news.
  • Examining new industry trends and their implications.
  • Collecting, organising and interpreting data.
  • Supporting or taking the lead on projects that advance sustainable-investment work.

Who can apply?

Applicants should meet all of the following requirements:

  • Currently be studying for a master’s degree or be enrolled in another graduate-level programme.
  • Show a clear, evidenced interest in both sustainability and finance.
  • Explain complicated subjects accurately and concisely.
  • Work well with others and show initiative when working independently.
  • Stay organised and deliver work against demanding deadlines.
  • Coordinate several projects and stakeholder relationships effectively.

The portal’s education-level field identifies MBA study, while the detailed eligibility text also includes other graduate-level programmes. The role description labels the opportunity as an Associate-level summer fellowship; the portal’s classification fields use Summer Associate.

Application documents and written response

Submit a résumé and a separate written response of no more than 300 words. The response should address all three parts of the sustainability question:

  1. Identify a sustainability topic that merits more attention from investors, companies or policymakers.
  2. Explain why that topic is frequently neglected.
  3. Describe what could happen if it continues to receive too little attention.

Compensation

The expected starting base salary rate is US$135,000 on an annual basis. This is an annualized rate, rather than a payment of US$135,000 for the 10-week fellowship. The listing does not state a total fellowship payment.

Base salary is one component of compensation. Depending on the position, additional compensation may include a discretionary bonus and access to Morgan Stanley benefit programmes; these are not presented as guaranteed awards for every fellow.

Full-time employment after the fellowship

The 2027 fellowship does not include an offer to return to Morgan Stanley in a full-time role.

How to apply and deadline

Open the application page, select Apply, and follow the portal instructions to submit your résumé and separate sustainability response. Complete the application by Friday, 13 November 2026 at 11:55 p.m. The listing does not specify a time zone, so submit ahead of the deadline.
